How to Make a Gif in Photoshop Tutorial

Note: I have Photoshop CS5 so I'm not completely positive how this translates to other Photoshop users.

Step one:

Step two:

  • · Open Photoshop > Window > Animation. This will bring the Animation Timeline up on the bottom of your Photoshop window
  • · Go to File > Open and open the video in which you want to make the gif from

Step three:

  • · Resize the image. Make sure the width is below 500.

  • · Sometimes you might have resize the image to make it anywhere from 350 to 500 in width.

Step four:

  • · Drag the red line across the timeline to where you want your gif to start.

Step five:

  • · Drag the work area start button to the red line (this will make the whole area gray).

  • · Move the red line to where you want your gif to end.
  • · Drag the work are end button to the red (this will make the other side gray).

Step six:

  • · Next you need to RENDER the video.
  • · File > Export > Render Video

Step Seven:

  • · Now you need to IMPORT the video
  • · File > Import > Video Frames to Layers

  • · More than likely you’re going to have to click on the “Limit to Every ____ Frames.” Basically this makes it where there are not as many frames. You’re going to want to keep the amount of frames around 10 to 15 (this will help your file size to be smaller).

Step Eight:

  • · In the bottom right hand corner there will be a little icon that has lines. Click on that and go up to Select All Frames (this will highlight all of the frames)

  • · After you highlight all of the frames click on the frame one layer (it should say something like 0.03 sec.). Change that to 0.1 sec. This makes it not go as fast.

  • · Also, make sure in the bottom left hand corner it states “Forever.” This makes your gif repeat itself.

Step Nine:

· Now you’re ready to save your gif

  • · Go to File > Save for Web and Devices

  • · There are a lot of factors that go into the size of your image. Number one the size of your image, how many colors are in your file and how many frames.

  • · You can adjust the size of your image to make it smaller, but you can also adjust how many colors. Usually you want your colors to be anywhere from 100 to 256 (more than likely, you’re not going to want it less than 100 because it will be very grainy).
  • · Make sure your file size is less than 500K. If it’s bigger than 500K, it won’t work on Tumblr.

(There are other additional steps you can make to change around your image. Changing your photo to black and white makes the size smaller. You can also darken up the photo or lighten it.)
